STAR Puppy Class
NO CLASS 2024
AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy is an exciting program designed to get dog owners and their puppies off to a good start. AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy is an excellent first in-person training class for puppies. AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy provides a good lead-in to earning the Canine Good Citizen title.
The Benefits of Training
Training classes teach you how to best communicate with your puppy. Organized training classes also provide an opportunity for your dog to socialize with other dogs. In classes aimed at earning the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy distinction, you’ll be able to get information on all of your puppy-raising questions including housetraining, chewing, and the most effective way to teach practical skills such as coming when called. AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy training is a natural lead in to the AKC® Canine Good Citizen® Program.
STAR puppy is open to all breeds of puppies from 10 weeks to 6 months of age.
We offer STAR puppy classes in January every year.
The class is 6 weeks long and meets on Wednesdays at 6:30PM.
Class Requirements: Puppies must be up to date on shots. Bring a plain buckle collar, leash, and plenty of treats.
Canine Good Citizen
Next Class: March 6th-May 1st
The Canine Good Citizen™ (CGC) program: an expert-made training program designed to help you and your dog be the best you can be–together.
Canine Good Citizen is a 10-skill test that teaches good manners to dogs and responsible dog ownership to their owners.
CGC is open to all dogs–purebred and mixed breed. There are no age limits for participating in the Canine Good Citizen program.
We offer CGC classes in the spring and fall. Specific dates TBD. CGCA and CGCU are also offered occasionally to anyone who has passed the CGC.
The class is 9 weeks long and meets on Wednesdays at 7:30PM.
Class Requirements: Dog must be at least 4 months of age. Bring a training collar (no harnesses), 6ft leash. Training collars and leashes are available for purchase during class.
AKC Novice Obedience
Next Class: TBD
Developed in the 1930s, Obedience is one of the AKC’s oldest sporting events, and it’s open to all dogs. From walking on- and off-leash to retrieving and jumping, or demonstrating your dog’s ability to stay, Obedience trials feature dogs that are well-behaved at home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs. It is essential that the obedience dog demonstrates willingness and enjoyment while it is working with the handler.
Obedience trials are open to all dogs. There are different types of trials offered by clubs, specifically:
- All-Breed Obedience Trials – the most common types of trials – are open to the 195 breeds and varieties of dogs recognized by the AKC, as well as mixed-breed dogs and Foundation Stock Service breeds.
- Specialty Trials are open to specific breeds or varieties within one breed.
To compete, your dog must be:
- At least 6 months of age.
- Physically sound.
- Have an AKC number via one of the following:
- AKC Registration as one of the 195 recognized breeds.
- AKC Canine Partners, which is for mixed-breed dogs and dogs ineligible for AKC registration.
- Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL) program, which is for purebred dogs that cannot be fully registered with the AKC.
- Foundation Stock Service®(FSS), which is for recorded breeds on the road to full AKC recognition.
In addition:
- Spayed females and neutered males are eligible to participate, but females in season are not.
- A dog that is blind is not eligible to participate.
- No dog may compete if it is taped or bandaged or has anything attached to it in any way for medical purposes.
- It is important that before competing, you have trained your dog for the required skills and you have familiarized yourself with the AKC Obedience Regulations and ring procedures.
Fast CAT
Next Fast CAT: May 3rd-5th
Fast CAT® – which stands for Coursing Ability Test – is a timed 100-yard dash where dogs run one at a time, chasing a lure. It’s over before you know it — and it’s nothing short of awe-inspiring to watch your dog run at top speed, ears back, eyes focused, legs strong.
Competition Eligibility
To participate in FAST CAT®, your dog must be:
- At least 12 months of age.
- Have an AKC number via one of the following:
- AKC Registration as one of the AKC’s recognized breeds.
- AKC Canine Partners, which is for mixed-breed dogs and dogs ineligible for AKC registration.
- Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL) program, which is for purebred dogs that cannot be fully registered with the AKC to participate in AKC events.
- Foundation Stock Service®(FSS), which is for recorded breeds on the road to full AKC recognition.
In addition:
- Spayed and neutered dogs are eligible to compete in these events and are welcome.
- Dogs with Limited or Conditional Registration are eligible to participate.
- Females in season are not eligible to participate.
An inspection committee will also inspect each dog for lameness and fitness to compete.
